Obituary for Charles Sale "Sale" Johnson Jr.

Charles Sale "Sale" Johnson Jr.
Charles Sale Johnson Jr., father, son, husband, uncle, friend, and bon vivant died Sept. 25 at Grays Harbor Health and Rehabilitation after a three year struggle with dementia.
Sale, a third generation Californian, was born in 1923 to Charles Sale Johnson, Sr. and Dorothy (Dillon) Johnson of Fresno, Calif. Three years later Sale's sister, Rosemary Johnson Dawson, was born. Rosemary passed away Sept. 25, 2014.
Sale graduated from Fresno's Roosevelt High School in 1943. Along with many classmates, he joined the service after graduation. Sale attended Navy officer training school at Northwestern University and gained the rank of Ensign 1st class. His Navy duty was aboard USS Barrow in the Pacific theater.
After the Japanese surrender he returned to Fresno and graduated from Fresno State College with a teaching degree. Johnson served as an elementary school principal in San Leandro, Calif. for over thirty years. He met Barbara Wynans, from Aberdeen, Wash. in San Leandro where she was a first year teacher. They married in 1959. She survives him at the family home in Central Park.
Sale brought two sons to their marriage; Charles Sale Johnson III, of San Diego, and Peter Johnson, of Coarsegold, Calif. Seven years later, Amanda and Samuel were born. Amanda and her husband, Jim Muck, live in Wheatland, Calif. Samuel and his wife, Robin, reside in Napa, Calif. After retiring in 1989, he and Barbara moved to Aberdeen to be closer to her parents, Ross and Sylvia Wynans, and her brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Susan Wynans.
Sale was quick witted and a great story teller. He loved newspapers, especially the editorial sections where he established his own reputation as a letter writer. "Fish on" was his favorite battle cry. He loved the challenges of bridge and crossword puzzles. He was a voracious reader of Napoleonic maritime historical fiction, but nothing pleased him more than spending the day cooking a family feast. He was loving, supportive, funny and a bigger-than-life hero to his family and friends.
Sale leaves niece, Kimberly Wynans, of Everett, Wash. and two nieces and a nephew Dorothy Dawson, Sloan Dawson Johnson (David) and John Dawson, all of Fresno.
A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Aberdeen on Saturday, Oct. 31 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a memorial in his name to Grays Harbor College Foundation c/o Jan Jorgenson would be appreciated.
