Obituary for Jane Louise Schloz

JANE (Buchta) SCHLOZ

Nebraska farm girl, volunteer extraordinaire, and always God’s faithful servant, Jane Schloz reunited in Heaven with her beloved husband “Gene” in early May 2022. Born on the family farm in Silver Creek, Nebraska to Hilbert and Grace Buchta, Jane attended a one-room schoolhouse, graduated as valedictorian of Silver Creek High School in 1940, and completed business school in Omaha. Jane remained a farm girl at heart for 99 years and cherished the memories of her rural upbringing with her “hero” brother, Glen, and numerous cousins and family members. She enjoyed reminiscing about family gatherings, homemade ice-cream socials, driving a tractor, milking the cow, and many farm and travel adventures.

Jane was an ACTIVE volunteer throughout her life. A member of the United Methodist Church, her strong faith brought her joy as a Sunday school teacher, UMW member and officer, and church helper in many capacities - including playing the piano and assisting with Bingo at the nursing home. In addition to church activities, Jane earned a lifetime PTA membership at Aberdeen’s Stevens School, tutored at Simpson Elementary in Montesano, spent 12 years volunteering for the Grays Harbor Conservation District, facilitated numerous 4-H events, led Girl Scout troops, assisted with elections on voting day, and donated gallons of blood. She was especially proud of her 18 years of service as a hospice volunteer. Her many contributions to the community were recognized in 2005 when she received The Margaret Downey Award. This endless list surely earned her a PhD in volunteering!

Jane not only had an eye for the needs of others, but also a zest for life and adventure. While attending the University of Omaha, Jane met her future husband at a Baptist Church social. She later packed her wedding dress and headed to Fort Benning Georgia where they were married just days before 2Lt Schloz graduated from Officer Candidate School. Eventually they came to Aberdeen, WA when Gene accepted a job at Scott’s Market. Finally they made Montesano their home when he went to work at Aberdeen’s Industrial Water Intake on the Wynoochee River. Jane’s adventures continued as she traveled by bus, train, and plane throughout the US, Europe, and Tunisia. She enjoyed telling of dining at the top of the Twin Towers in New York, dog sledding in Alaska, and cruising through the Panama Canal in 2017 at the age of 95.

An accomplished seamstress, Jane made numerous Halloween costumes, bridesmaid dresses, suits, and everyday outfits for herself and her daughters. She had her own sense of style and was “thrifting” before it was popular. Treasure-hunting at The Dollar Store and Value Village provided Jane great enjoyment. Pearls and polished nails were her signature later in life.

Always thoughtful, Jane will be remembered for the volumes of letters and greeting cards she sent through the years to recognize and celebrate milestones and accomplishments. A devoted mother and major cheerleader for her family, Jane provided a home filled with love for her daughters, JoAnn, Janet, and Janell; her grandchildren Ian, Maria, Dean, Rachel, Dawson, Graham, and Caleb; great-grandchildren Mallory, Keily, Colton, Sierra, Michael, and Deryn; an AFS exchange student from Thailand (Angkhana); and many beloved Foster children. Jane also leaves behind nieces, nephews, cousins, her Colonial Inn “family,” her dear high school classmate, Dorothy, her West Point pen-pal, Nicole, and a host of treasured friends; all were recipients of Jane’s kindness. She was preceded in death by her husband Gene, with whom she celebrated 44 years of marriage, and her devoted brother Glen, who was stationed close enough to give her away on her wartime wedding day.

In her final months, Jane herself was on hospice. Her family wishes to express the deepest of gratitude to Anaya, Chrystal, Chaplain Kim, Tracy, and her entire hospice team; as well as to Lucia, Ezra, Jorge, and the staff at Umbrella Always Care adult family home. Their kind and compassionate care made a world of difference and helped ease the completion of a beautiful life. A service is planned at Montesano United Methodist Church on July 9, at 2:00 PM. A private inurnment service was held at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent Washington.

“Mom, Grandma, Mama, GG, Great Grandma Jane, and Mama Jane,” as she was lovingly called, left us a legacy of love, compassion, and service. She will be missed and loved forever by all who were welcomed into her life. As per Jane’s request, in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Montesano United Methodist Church, 401 E Spruce Ave, Montesano, WA 98563; Providence SoundHomeCare and Hospice, 4200 6th Ave SE, Suite 201, Lacey, WA 98503; or Harbor Home Health & Hospice, myhhhh.org.
