Obituary for Doris Aliene Carleson

Our beloved mother, Doris Aliene (Richmond) Carleson passed away quietly in her sleep on June 6, 2018 at the age of 95. She is survived by a son, Jack L. Carleson, daughter, Suzanne K. Koidahl and by 17 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. Mom was born in Pittsburg Kansas to Purvis E. and Minnie Richmond on September 5, 1922, the youngest girl of six children. Her siblings and parents have preceded her in death as have one daughter, Billie Gayle Lockhart and one son, Donald Lee Carleson. When she was 3, her family moved to Port Orchard, Washington where she grew up, attended school and met her husband Donald (Bud) Carleson. They married June 6, 1942 and 5 days later he left for basic training. She traveled to various states with him until he shipped out, and then, as so many war brides did, went to work in the Bremerton Navy Yard until becoming pregnant with their first child. After the war they moved to Port Angeles where she raised their 4 children and Dad worked as a commercial fisherman. When the family was grown, she became his first mate and worked alongside him almost 15 years, until a freighter sunk their boat. During this time they moved to Sequim, and Mom, always an avid gardener, became active in the Sequim Garden Club. After Dad’s death in 1999, she was encouraged to move to the Grays Harbor area, purchased a trailer and moved onto her daughter and son-in-laws’ property in Artic. She became active in the South Aberdeen Red Hat Aristocrats and the Artic Quilters Group and kept busy with them and with gardening and reading. She lived a very full and interesting life, and all who knew her will miss her. A Memorial Celebration of Life will be held July 7 from 1-4 pm at the Artic Community Center. Arrangements are being completed by Harrison Family Mortuary. Any donations may be made to one of her favorite charities, the Aberdeen Salvation Army or Paralyzed Veterans.
