Obituary for Rex Brian Clarkston

On Friday, Nov. 2, 2018, Rex B. Clarkston, 56, ended his six-month battle with cancer, soaring into heaven with his newly acquired angel wings.

Rex was surrounded by family when he took his final breath at his home in Elma. He opened his eyes briefly to say goodbye to his wife of 37 years, Doris. He came to rest with a permanent grin on his face. A fitting ending to a man who had a jolly sense of humor.

Rex, a longtime resident of Elma, was born on Oct. 4, 1962, to Floyd and Bessie Clarkston in Anchorage, Alaska. He was the last of three children.

Rex was raised in the Last Frontier, where he fell in love with the outdoors and Doris. They met on the strip at Northern Lights Boulevard in 1980. A year later, they married. They had two sons in Anchorage – Derek and Justin – before relocating to Washington state in 1986. The couple took up residency in Elma, and later two daughters – Brittany and Megan – joined the family.

Rex devoted his life to family. They were his everything. He worked hard to give them the life they deserved. He spent 30 years working for Simpson – 27 at Mill 5 in Shelton and three at the door plant in McCleary. Even after being diagnosed with a rare illness, he continued to find the will to work – a testament to who he was.

When not working, Rex was a simple man, enjoying woodworking, camping, car shows, gardening, reading, sports and most of all spending time with his five (one on the way) grandchildren – Emma, Treven, Izaiah, Maverick and Noah. They called him “Papa.”

He was a faithful man and an integral member of the Elma Church of God. This might have explained Rex’s passion for Christmas. He looked forward to this holiday, and did it right by belting songs, filling the kitchen with the aroma of cookies and dipped pretzels, and brightening the house with decorations. He was known for reading "The Night Before Christmas," his Christmas village and loading the family in the minivan to look at lights.

Rex was preceded in death by his father, Floyd; father-in-law, Clifford Roberson; and brother, Lonnie. He is survived by his wife, Doris; children Derek Clarkston (Kodiak, Alaska), Justin Clarkston (Aberdeen), Brittany Miller (Cosmopolis) and Megan Jump (Elma); mother, Bessie Clarkston (Wasilla, Alaska); sister, Renee Daniels (Wasilla, Alaska); and mother-in-law, Lou Roberson (Elma).

A memorial service for Rex will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Elma Church of God, 109 S. 6th St. Elma.

Rex ended every text message he sent with “HOHOHO.” Here is one final “HOHOHO” for Rex.
