Obituary for Deborah Lynn "Debbie" Piercey (Major)

Deborah Lynn Piercey

Debbie Piercey, 69, Lost her life long battle with Juvenile diabetes September 28, 2018 at Providence St. Peters Hospital. It was a beautiful sunny day and her children and husband were at her bedside. Debbie was a 20 year Cosmopolis resident and a lifetime Grays Harbor resident. She was born April 14, 1949 to Ervin and Doris (Daves) Major in Longview, WA.

Debbie attended Weatherwax High School with the Class of 1967 and earned her G.E.D from Grays Harbor College in 1985.

In her younger years she worked at St. Joseph Hospital, Grays Harbor Paper, The Chair Factory and Greg and Brads Quick Stop.

Debbie and Rick Piercey were married August 19, 1971 in Aberdeen, WA.

Because her husband worked decades of shift work, Debbie chose to stay home and be a homemaker. She kept an immaculate house, lawn, and garden. Debbie liked to dance, listen to 60’s and 70’s music, drive nice cars, and wear new clothes and shoes.

In 1989 Debbie lost all her vision due to the diabetes. She then trained with her guide dog Katrinka (Yellow Lab) for 4 weeks at Guide Dogs for the Blind in San Rafael, CA. After Katrinka retired Debbie trained with her guide dog Satin (Doberman Pincher) for 2 weeks at Pilot Dogs in Columbus, OH.

Debbie was instrumental in the commencement of S.I.G.H.T. an organization for the visually impaired. She served as President, Vice President and Secretary. Blindness didn’t stop her from gardening, cooking, and her daily routine. She enjoyed cutting, grinding, and wrapping game meat, making pies and jam from little wild blackberries, and canning clams, mushrooms, and vegetables from her garden. Debbie loved listening to QVC and her talking books day and night. Usually, her seventeen year old cockatiel, Dylan, was on her shoulder or leg. She had a collection of elephants and turtles.

The day before her scheduled admittance to the hospital, and in a tremendous amount of pain, she made clam dip, tuna fish for sandwiches, and baked potatoes to fry. Debbie was concerned her husband wouldn’t have anything to eat during her hospital stay. It was not a good plan to tell her NOT to do something. Debbie being independent is an understatement.

Debbie is survived by her loving family, her husband of 47 years at the family home, daughter Tracy Brown (Mike A.) of the Wishkah and Ocean Shores; son Dustin (Stephanie) of Tumwater; sister Starla of Belfair; mother in-law Phyllis Piercey of Lacey; sister in-law Marlys Hamiton of Olympia; brothers in-law Gary Piercey of Summit Lake and Robert Piercey Jr. (Dona) of Rochester.

Debbie was preceded in death by both her parents, sister Norma Major, and father in-law Robert J. Piercey.

Debbie was an intricate part of the family and is sorely missed. When her husband passes their ashes will be mixed together and spread in an undisclosed location at North River. Where they like to hunt, pick berries, and mushrooms.

At her request there will be no formal service. There will be a private family gathering at an undetermined date.

Because her corneas weren’t damaged by her blindness, Debbie donated them to Sight Life. “She once was blind but now she can see.”

Memorials in Deborah’s name may be sent to Washington Talking Books & Braille Library, 2021 9th Avenue, Seattle, WA, 98129.
