John Arthur Hinderlie passed away on Thursday, June 22, 2017 at the home of his eldest son, he was 79. John was born October 7, 1937 in North Bend, Oregon to Arthur Rodney Hinderlie and Clara Patricia (Harris) Hinderlie. John lived in East Satsop since 1994, but spent much of his life moving with his parents to lighthouse stations up and down the Washington and Oregon coasts. His father, Arthur, was a Chief Petty Officer in the US Coast Guard.
John had a very adventurous childhood and stories of lighthouse and beach escapades were told at most family gatherings. He loved cars and could cite make, model and year of all his favorites, how fast they were, what kind of trouble he could get into while driving them, and how many people he could stuff into a Ford to go to the drive-in. John attended several schools, Port Orford, Garibaldi, Ilwaco, and graduated from North Bend High School in 1955. On May 4, 1956 at 18 years old, John married Wilma Jean (Raines) Hinderlie who was 15. Soon after their marriage, John was shot in a hunting accident and was unable to work, a true test of a young couple’s marriage, but they came through it like champs. They had a long and happy marriage before Wilma’s passing in 2012. Together, they had twin sons Michael P. and Martin W., born in 1962, and Peggy S. (Hinderlie) Smith, born in 1966. The beach and lake adventures continued, now a group of 5. Sand bugs, ski boats, race cars and motorcycles were family favorites. In 1978, the family moved to Raymond, WA, where the three kids graduated from Valley High School.
John was employed in the timber industry. He got his first break as a young man at a paper mill in Toledo. OR. Working his way through the electrical trade, he finished his career as an Electrical Supervisor for Weyerhaeuser in Raymond and Cosmopolis mills, retiring from the former to the family home in Satsop. John was an active member in his local churches. He served as an Elder and loved teaching and reading about bible prophecy. He was a steady force when it came to questions of faith, and could always be counted on to point to Christ when life events, good or bad, occurred. His humble nature allowed him to teach with a gentle manner, he would be the first person you would go to with a problem and always came away feeling better for the conversation. When he passed, he was attending the Elma Alliance Church.
John is survived by his sons Michael (Kim) Hinderlie, Martin (Ellen) Hinderlie and daughter Peggy Smith. Grandchildren Nicole Jorgensen, Jessica (Joe) Herbst, Chris Hinderlie, Megan Hinderlie, Matt Hinderlie, Hailey Smith, Alexis Smith and Tara Smith. Great grandchildren Renner, Rhyan, Ashton, Grayson and Calvin. His brothers Thomas Hinderlie of California and David (Dianna) Hinderlie of Des Moines Washington, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his beloved wife Wilma.
A memorial service will be held at the Elma Alliance Church on Saturday, July 1, 2017 at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers or memorial donations, John would much rather you donate an hour of your time. Go to church; spend time learning and seeking answers about Christ. They both would love that.
