Obituary for Esther Signe Cummings

Esther Signe Cummings passed away Tuesday, April 25, 2017. She was 88. Esther was born on June 26, 1928 to Peter and Anne (Odegaard) Torheim in Aberdeen, WA where she was raised and graduated from Weatherwax High School in 1947.

On April 16, 1955 Esther married Earl Cummings. In 1969 they made their family home in Cosmopolis, WA. She has lived in that same house ever since.

Esther worked for Twin Harbors Lumber Company for a total of 25 years within two periods, taking time off to have her children. After which she just wanted to be a homemaker.
She attended Heritage Family Church of the Assembly of God, a Lifelong member of the Sons of Norway where she was the assistant social coordinator, she enjoyed going to the Senior gatherings at the Cosmopolis Lions Club.

Through the years, she enjoyed playing the piano and violin, making ceramics, needle point, crocheting towels, doing decoupage plates. She loved to putter around in her garden. She loved to travel and had gone to Norway with her mom in 1950 after her father’s passing and again in 1982 for 2 months with her husband Earl and children, Rod and Lisa while David stayed home to work and take care of the pets and house. She also traveled thru the years with Earl, family and friends and Earl’s sister Betty and her husband, Frank. Throughout the years, the family enjoyed annual car trips in the western United States with stops primarily in California to visit relatives. Since David couldn’t go with the rest of the family to Norway, she took David to Hawaii in 1998 and had taken several trips to Hawaii with either Lisa or David as that was one of her favorite places to visit. She went on two cruises to the Caribbean, of which one of them was a family cruise with all the kids and grandkids and the final cruise was to Alaska which she loved so much. She enjoyed trips to Arizona and Bend, OR with Lisa and good friend, like a daughter, Kathy (Fields) Vatter. Everywhere she traveled or event she went to she was known for taking pictures. She always liked to go to coffee time with her friends with the Sons of Norway. Her last outing was with the Sons of Norway Ladies Auxiliary. Last but not least, she loved her pets, especially her cat Wiley and her grand dogs Lexi, Willow, and Oscar.

She is survived by her sons, David Cummings (at the family home, Cosmopolis, WA), Rodney (Dawn Marie) Cummings, Portland, OR and daughter, Lisa Cummings Snohomish, WA. Two grandchildren, Olivia and Colby. She had many very close life-long friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Earl Cummings.

A graveside service will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 5, 2017 at Fern Hill Cemetery, Aberdeen, WA. A memorial will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at The Sons of Norway Hall, 717 Randall St, Aberdeen, WA. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heritage Family Church or the Sons of Norway in Esther’s name.
