Obituary for John Michael Harrington


John Michael Harrington peacefully passed away on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2016, at home in his own bed near McCleary, Wash. John was born in The Bronx, N.Y. on March 28, 1937, to Joseph and Mary (Burke) Harrington. The family later moved to Flushing, N.Y., where he was raised.

On Sept. 15, 1983, John married Deatra (Lambert) Harrington in Elkton, Md. John and Deatra then moved to Sayville, Long Island, and also lived in Jackson Heights, N.Y., for 13 years, before relocating to the Grays Harbor area in 2002.

John was employed with Local 46 Metallic Lathers & Reinforcing Iron Workers Union NYC for 30+ years. He retired and an Ironworker Supervisor. He also served in the United States Navy, signing himself in at age 17.

John was a talented Irish Tenor, avid reader, conversationalist and intellectual with a great sense of humor. He loved children, animals and giving financial support to children’s charities.

John is survived by his wife Deatra Harrington; daughters Audrey Maidens and Laura Gallagher both of Florida, Diane Lo Grasso of New Jersey, and Siobhan Peterson of Washington; siblings Richard Harrington and Mary Fountaine both of New York, six grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brothers Frank and Joseph Harrington.
