Clara Jane Rowe graduated to heaven on July 20, 2016, at home with family at her side.
Clara was born in Aberdeen, Washington on November 23, 1936 to Don and Harriet (Watson) LeVering. Her family moved to Elma from Markham in her junior year of high school where she was a graduate of the EHS Class of 1954. Clara married William “Bill” Rowe at her parent’s home in Elma on August 20, 1955. Her early years of marriage were that of a military wife, their first post being Ft. Lewis, followed by Ft. Buchanan in Puerto Rico, and finally Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. After his retirement, she and Bill returned to Elma to stay.
Clara had a twenty five year career as an elementary school secretary with the Elma School District, “training” numerous principals and superintendents who only thought they were in charge, encouraging and/or straightening out teachers as the situation called for and generally becoming a beloved and integral part of the school and community. She was an avid Seahawk fan and her grandchildren, all Elma Eagles, had no bigger fan or supporter. Anyone who ever had occasion to ask her how she was got her stock answer “mean and ornery”, when in fact; she was the exact opposite.
Clara is survived by her four daughters: Lois (Terry) Moore of Hoquiam, Linda Howarth, Lori (Steve) Lindley, and Lisa (Brian) Sutherby, all of Elma, and her step-son Randy (Lorella) Johnson of Virginia; fourteen grandchildren: Ryan (Heather) Moore, Megan Totten, Katie Howarth, Matthew (Janell) Howarth, Arianne Howarth, Erik (Melanie) Lindley, Kellen Lindley, Jordan (Jessica Cleverly) Lindley, Alyssa Sutherby and Brooke Sutherby, Debbie (JoDamian) Aston, Melissa (Andy) Whitlock, Jesse Rose and Jake Johnson; sixteen great-grandchilren, and her sister, Marie Raymond of Ellensburg. She was preceded in death by her husband Bill, son-in-law, Matt Howarth, brother David LeVering, sister Harriette LeVering Foy, and special friend Les Westover.
She was a member of Chapter GM P.EO. and attended Harbor City Church in Aberdeen.
A Celebration of Life will be held September 24th at the Elma Fairgrounds, further information will be provided at a later date. The family suggests memorial contributions to Education, Inc. c/o Teresa Boling, 107 Edgewood Ave, Elma, WA 98541 or the charity of one’s choice.
