Obituary for Gene Yakovich Jr.

Gene Yakovich Jr.
Gene Yakovich
Gene Yakovich of Aberdeen, Washington went to be with the Lord on the morning of Friday, March 11, 2016. He was a loving, caring and supportive husband and father, an adoring grandfather, a devoted son and brother, a fun-loving and dependable friend, and an all-around cherished member of our community. Gene spent his last days the same way he lived—surrounded by the steadfast love of his family and the adoration of his many friends and relatives. He was born on the 12th of September 1951 in Aberdeen, Washington to Kathryn and Gene Yakovich.

Gene graduated from Aberdeen High School with the class of 1969, and subsequently earned his Associate of Arts Degree from GHC. He spent 43 years serving the Grays Harbor community through his business, Gene Yakovich Jr. Trucking and Excavation. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and in later years enjoyed attending the Central Park Baptist Church.

Gene married Jeanie Smith on January 31st, 1976. They built a wonderful family together over the years, raising two daughters, Amy and Brenda, and a son, Michael, and cherishing their two granddaughters, Ava and Violet. Some of their most cherished family pastimes include boating, waterskiing, and tubing at Black Lake, four-wheeling in the Dunes, clam digging, vacationing in Sun Lakes, Hawai’i, or Palm Springs, or gathering around the kitchen table for some good-spirited, competitive board games. He could also often be found mowing his lawn with perfect symmetry, polishing his collection of classic cars, shooting pool, or engaging neighbors, friends and family with stories from his life, which was full of happiness, adventure, and love. Though he was taken sooner than we would have liked, he was outlived by no one. He will be truly and deeply missed.

Gene is survived by his loving wife Jeanie, mother Kathryn, daughter Amy (Lucas) Rakocija and granddaughter Ava, daughter Brenda (Dustin) Schmidt and granddaughter Violet, son Michael Yakovich, sister Paulette (Tom) Jacobson, sister Rose (Doug) McCartney, brothers Paul, George (Connie) and Matt Yakovich, and his many relatives and close friends.

Family and friends of the Yakovich family are warmly invited to attend a Funeral Mass at St. Mary Catholic Church beginning at 1:00 PM on Thursday, March 17th with a reception following. There will be a viewing at Harrison Family Mortuary on Wednesday, March 16th from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm.

The family sends its heartfelt gratitude to the outpouring of community support. We especially want to thank Fay Purcell, Dr. William Isacoff, his entire staff, Dr. Juliette Erickson and Mindy Moore for their exceptional care of Gene. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society. If so inclined, you can do so by visiting: https://donate.cancer.org/index.
