Obituary for Aileen Mildred Long (Rath)

Aileen Mildred Long (Rath)
Aileen Mildred Rath Long

Aileen Long, 95, passed away peacefully in Vancouver, Washington, on July 21, 2015. A proud native of Aberdeen, she made her home there until 2010, when she moved to The Quarry Senior Living Residence in Vancouver to be near two of her daughters. There she enjoyed the company of new friends in a beautiful environment, recently celebrating her 95th birthday party with her daughters, their families, her nephew, Dick Amble, and many new and old friends.
Aileen was born on June 6, 1920, to Helen and Gunnar Rath. She was the youngest of three children. She graduated from Weatherwax High School and attended Grays Harbor Business School. She was employed by Sears, where she met Bob Long, the love of her life. They were married at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church (now known as Amazing Grace Lutheran Church) on July 25, 1942. She later became the business manager for L & B Refrigeration, Inc., founded by Bob and his partner Arlo Beck in 1950. Together they worked tirelessly to grow a successful business.
Aileen was an active, life-long member of Amazing Grace Lutheran Church, participating in church circle, quilting, and community service. She belonged to PEO, and once served as the Chapter DP president. She enjoyed participating in Lions and Elks club events with her husband and friends.
Together, Aileen and Bob traveled the world, including China, Europe, Scandinavia and New Zealand. Aileen's Norwegian and Swedish heritage was an important part of her life and she cherished her correspondence and visits with her Norwegian relatives. She instilled in her daughters a love of all things Scandinavian and they carry on the family traditions. Aileen was an accomplished homemaker, baker, seamstress, and gardener. She was devoted to her four daughters, her many grandchildren, great grandchildren and other family.
Aileen was preceded in death by her dear husband, Robert (Bob) Long, her brother, Gunnar Emil Rath, Jr., and her sister, Lillian Rath Amble. She is survived by daughter Diane and husband Peter Dawson of Dallas, Texas; daughter Janet and husband Michael Krulich of Bloomington, Minnesota; daughter Margit and husband Daryle Rustvold of Ridgefield, Washington, and daughter Mary Kathryn Long and husband James Wade of Portland, Oregon. Other survivors include Aileen’s four grandsons, Jeffrey, Robert and Matthew Krulich, and Peter T. Dawson; three granddaughters, Paige Dawson, Marion Lansdon, and Tina Smith; fifteen great grandchildren, and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was our cherished Mom, Nana, and Great Grandmother (GG), and will be deeply missed by all. We are comforted knowing that she and Dad are together again.
A memorial service in celebration of Aileen's life will be held on Friday, August 7, 2015, at 12:00 pm, Amazing Grace Lutheran Church, Aberdeen, Washington. There will be a reception following the service in the Parish Hall at the church. Memorials may be made to Amazing Grace Lutheran Church, 111 East Fourth Street, Aberdeen, or to the Macular Degeneration Center Fund, OHSU Casey Eye Institute, c/o OHSU Foundation, MS/45, PO Box 4000, Portland, Oregon 97208-9852.
